On our final night in Verona we went to a cute place called Caffe Monte Baldo. The food was wonderful but the experience is what made it so fun. It was a gorgeous day but for some reason we decided to sit inside (we decided after we sat down that inside was a complete waste of sunshine). We were into our second bite of pasta when suddenly the skies let loose and people were rushing in with their meals in hand. Apparently, the weather gives no warning in Verona except two dribbles of rain and then full-fledged down pour. People were taking the huge table umbrellas off the outside tables and desperately using them to get inside – unlike in Seattle, they don’t believe in getting wet. Great to watch the always-pulled- together-looking Italians look like a chaotic mess for a minute or two.
I learned a new drink in Verona, a Apperol Spritz made with Prosecco and Apperol or club soda, white wine and Apperol. Later in our travels I also learned that Campari can be substituted for Apperol giving a bitter taste instead of a sweet orangy flavor. Yes, this from the wine gal that says wine is NOT for mixing.
Now it is off to Venice…
